He is the founder of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco and continues to volunteer as general counsel for this organization. He was co–counsel in the precedent-setting U.S. Supreme Court asylum case, INS v. Cardoza–Fonseca (1987). Bill Hing is the author of numerous academic and practice–oriented publications on immigration policy and race relations. He has been a Professor of Law and Migration Studies at the University of San Francisco since 2010, where he is also the Director of the Immigration and Deportation Defense Clinic.

He has been passionately devoted to education equity and social justice. And as many of you know, he is a selfless and tireless warrior, and the recognition he has received during his career is a testament to how much of an impact he has made and continues to make. During these tumultuous times where so much is uncertain, we'd like to honor and celebrate Bill Hing for his birthday. Join us in community.

The Bill Ong Hing Undocumented Student Scholarship is a very special scholarship for undocumented students in law school in the State of California. This scholarship is in honor of and dedicated to Professor Bill Ong Hing - a staunch advocate for immigrant rights and social justice, as well as a fighter for immigrants, the immigrant community, and communities of color. Prof. Hing has spent decades fighting for social justice through grassroots organizing, litigation, teaching, scholarship, mentorship, friendship and community advocacy. He has inspired students from every spectrum to be passionately dedicated, firm in their convictions, and to stand up for what is right.

As a professor, author, Dean's Circle Scholar, and Director of the Immigration & Deportation Defense Clinic at the University of San Francisco School of Law,  Prof. Hing continues to work for the underprivileged and underserved. According to his faculty profile, Prof. Hing was "co-counsel in the precedent-setting U.S. Supreme Court asylum case, INS v. Cardoza–Fonseca (1987), and represented the State Bar of California in In Re Sergio Garcia (2014), in granting a law license to an undocumented law graduate." He is also the founder of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco, California.

As a professor, he has consistently and devotedly helped immigrant students and students of color, while staying away from the limelight, in hopes that they may have an equitable chance at success.    As a rebellious lawyer, Prof. Hing has taught students to give back when they can and be a part of the community that you serve, learn from the community just as they learn from you, and to collaborate with them in tandem, so that clients becomes their own changemakers.

Prof. Hing is more than a fighter and social justice warrior - he is a man filled with vigor, compassion, and kindness.
